Retainers

Why Do I Need Retainers?

When active treatment is completed it is important to have a period of retention. Retainers are designed to keep your teeth straight. If they are not worn then your teeth are likely to drift back to their original positions. Retainers are removable braces that hold the newly straightened teeth in position whilst the surrounding gum and bone 'firms up' to hold the teeth in place.

How Long Do I Wear Them For?

The retention process does take time, so be patient. On average the retainers are worn full time for 6 months, then wear is gradually reduced over 6 months. You will then be advised that retainers should be worn long term on occasional nights.

Keeping Retainers Clean

Your retainers must be cleaned at least twice a day and it is also important to soak them in a sterilizing agent - we recommend Retainer Brite.

Handle Them With Care

Retainers are easier to lose than you think, and replacing them is expensive! Make sure you put them in the retainer box provided whenever they are not in your mouth. Retainers have a habit of falling on the floor and being stepped on, or even being picked up and chewed by pets!
